Am Morgen wehte der Wind über meine gefrorenen Augen -- for Solo Cello (2002).
(Recording: 5’58”; Cellist:  Cheryl Rajewski)

This piece was commissioned by cellist Cheryl Rajewski. For inspiration I used a poem which I wrote in Berlin
during the last few weeks before I took the plane to the United States to pursue composition at Mills College in California.

The composition is full of departures, in-betweens, and sensuality, just as I experienced my life in 1999. First I thought
that the experience of departure was particular to times of transition such as my last months in Berlin.  Now I realize that,
in a consciously lived life, every moment is a departure from the moment before.

am Morgen

wehte

der Wind

über meine gefrorenen Augen

Tränen

erwachet

und zu

Tränen erwacht

weine ich

dir

einen Bach

zu Füßen

du

mein

selbsterschaffenes

Leben

und dir

meines Herzens

altvertraute

Seele

der Wind weht

über meine gefrorenen Augen

erwecke sie

zu Tränen

schließe sie

mit Lust

in the morning

the wind

blew

across my frozen eyes

tears

wake up

and

to tears

woken up

I cry

a creek

to your feet

you

my

self-created

life

and to you

my heart’s

old-familiar

soul

the wind blows

across my frozen eyes

wake them up

to tears

close them

with pleasure
